Discovery of three mass graves in the FARDC camp in Bavi, Ituri, Democratic Republic of Congo.Kinshasa, 25 November 2006: The November 22, 2006, on the basis of information gathered during numerous investigations, a mission of the Prosecutor military garrison near the Bunia Military Court and the Human Rights Division of MONUC in Bunia, visited the camp of the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC) Bavi, 32 kilometers south of Bunia, and 15 km from the town of Gety, in Ituri, and discovered three mass graves containing human remains, including those of women and children, victims of executions sommaires.La discovery of mass graves and corroborating information used to estimate the total number of victims to about 30 people.According to witnesses directly involved putting these executions allegedly committed by soldiers of the 1st Brigade of Intervention Battalion Integrated FARDC based in Bavi, including two officers have been arrested for their alleged role and responsibilities in this affaire.En August and September 2006, the Division of Human Rights MONUC in Bunia had received information that some of Gety IDP camp, who went to look for food in the surrounding villages, were not returned to the camp, nor were in their places of origin.This discovery was made by MONUC and the prosecutor of the Bunia garrison, following an investigation initiated in August by the two structures.Bavi is a town located south of the capital of the Ituri district.According to the Division of Human Rights of the MONUC in Ituri, would contain the graves of missing persons for three months.After this macabre discovery, two officers of the 1 st Integrated Brigade FARDC already arrested for need of inquiry.On October 3, "Justice more," one man rights advocacy NGO based in Ituri, had denounced the disappearance thirty Due war displaced, from villages in Sorodo and Avegi, near Gety .In a statement, the NGO suspected a group of soldiers of the first integrated FARDC brigade d'être at the base of the disappearance.For Mpiana Gode, a leader of "Justice more," the discovery of these three pits is coming reinforce their fears."A week after the publication of our press release, we had additional reports of the execution of all these victims.Nobody believed, particularly the military authorities were engaged in baseless denials, "said the activist Mpiana.Following this information, the Military Prosecutor, the Human Rights Section, as well as local and international NGOs for human rights, immediately opened an investigation that continues to this day.
MONUC welcomes the Military Prosecutor for the work done with the full cooperation of the command of FARDC in Ituri.It deplores and condemns any extrajudicial executions, including that of vulnerable civilians, especially due to a regular force whose mission is to defend and protect.
MONUC calls on the military judicial authorities to ensure that all light be shed without complacency, the circumstances of these criminal and heinous acts.She asks that all the perpetrators and accomplices of such acts are brought to justice without delay, to answer for their crimes and to suffer the rigors of the law, within the framework of the legitimate struggle against impunity.
